Back in 2011 we were scratching our heads about how we were going to be able to raise the finance for memorials, plaques, headstones, etc. We had created a charity but no funds were available to us, so we set about fundraising. We needed a major fundraising event and we hit on the idea of retracing the route taken by the Iron soldiers from Le Havre to Guise. They did it mostly by train but we decided to do it by a 400 km sponsored bike ride. The event target was £4000.00 but from memory we raised in excess of £6000.00 which was about 50% of the overall target. I wrote an account of the ride which still exists online and when I read it again recently, the memories came flooding back.
